Xenical
Xenical (orlistat) is used to help obese people to lose weight quicker and more effectively than if they were simply following a diet plan and doing some exercise. Xenical is used only when the degree of obesity indicates serious problems that may develop. Xenical must be taken during or within one hour after a meal that contains fat. If your meal does not contain fat you can skip your dosage. However, make sure your diet is balanced and includes certain amount of fat for your body to function properly. Since the effects of this medicine are based on blocking the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene you need to take multivitamin containing vitamins A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. The vitamins are supposed to be taken once a day, 2 hours before or 2 hours after your dosage of Xenical. Alternatively the multivitamin can be taken at bedtime. While taking Xenical, especially at the beginning of the treatment, you need to watch for any side effects that seem serious. For instance, such side effects as gas with oily spotting, oily or fatty stools, headache, stomach pain, anxiety, difficulty controlling bowel movements, and loose stools are not considered to be serious enough unless they persist or change in intensity, preventing you from doing your routine activities.
Inform your health care provider of any medications you are taking at the moment to prevent them from interfering with Xenical. The following ones are to be reported: anticoagulants, medications for diabetes, medications to control blood pressure, other medications for weight loss, and medications for thyroid disease, as well as any other preparations or supplements you are taking. In case of being pregnant or breastfeeding do not start taking Xenical without talking to your health care provider first. Your baby may be harmed and you need to think about all the risks and benefits related to the treatment. Report to your local emergency center the following symptoms as they may indicate you are having an allergic reaction to Xenical: itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, and rash. Do not take any more of Xenical until told so by your health care provider.
